Celebrate Black History Month at Jackson College with a special commemoration from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19 in Bert Walker Hall, Rooms 144-145.
Jackson College’s event will examine the history of Black History Month and contributions of Black Americans. It will feature a historical tribute, musical entertainment by local artist Brandon Marceal, authentic “soul food” and beverages. The event is free, and College and community members are welcome.
Black History Month is a time to remember and celebrate the achievements of Black Americans. The event grew out of the first “Negro History Week,” in 1926, the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. February coincides with the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month.
